When a game moves, is your child learning or just watching?

Movement on a screen grabs a young child's eyes. Sometimes it teaches them something, and sometimes it just steals attention from the part that matters. Here is how to tell the difference.

Sit next to your five-year-old during a learning game and watch their eyes. Something on the screen wiggles or sparkles, and their gaze snaps to it. Fast. The question worth asking is simple: is that movement teaching them something, or just pulling their attention around the screen?

It matters more than it sounds, because movement is not a small design choice. It changes what a child walks away knowing.

Here is the encouraging part. When animation is doing a real job, it helps. A meta-analysis by Höffler and Leutner pulled together 26 studies and 76 comparisons of moving versus still pictures, and found a solid overall advantage for animation, with an average effect size of d = 0.37 [1]. The gap grew when the animation actually showed something happening, like a process or a physical motion, and it shrank when the movement was just decoration [1]. So a picture of two groups of monsters sliding together to become one bigger group can teach adding in a way a still picture cannot. The motion carries the idea.

Now the part that keeps our designers honest. The same movement that can teach can also rob. Young children are not good at ignoring the shiny thing, and that is not a flaw in your child, it is their age. Their brains are still building the brakes that let an adult glance at a flashing banner and look away.

An eye-tracking study from 2024 makes this uncomfortably clear. Researchers gave preschoolers aged four and five the same digital picture book in three versions: one with animations tied to the story, one with animations that were fun but off-topic, and a plain static one. The children who saw the off-topic animation understood the story less well than the other two groups [2]. The eye-tracking showed why. Those kids spent more time looking at the irrelevant moving bits and less time on the parts that carried the meaning [2]. The wiggle won the eyes and the story lost.

This is not a one-off finding. A 2020 meta-analysis of what researchers call seductive details, the interesting but irrelevant extras we add to make lessons more fun, found that they tend to leave learners remembering less of the important material, not more [3]. The fun stuff sticks. The point it was wrapped around slips away.

So we use one rule when we animate anything in Wonderix. Does the movement carry the idea, or is it just fireworks?

A real example. We once built a counting game where getting the number right set off a whole meadow of fireworks. The kids in our playtests loved it. They cheered. Then we noticed something. They started tapping faster and faster to get to the fireworks, and when we asked a child what number they had just made, more of them just shrugged. The celebration had become the game. So we made it smaller, and we put the energy somewhere better. Now when you add two groups of little monsters, the monsters themselves scurry across the screen and pile together, so the thing that moves is the thing you are meant to learn. The kids still cheer. They also remember the number.

You do not need eye-tracking gear to use this at home. Next time your child is playing something, watch where their eyes go when it moves. If the moving thing is the idea, the counting, the shape that changes, good. If the moving thing is confetti and cartoon explosions while the actual lesson sits still in the corner, that game is spending your child's attention on the wrong thing.

And if you want a two-second version for the kid sitting next to you: "Ooh, watch what the monsters do when we put them together. Ready?" You just pointed their eyes at the part that teaches.

None of this means calm and joyless. Wonder needs a bit of sparkle, and a child who is delighted is a child who comes back tomorrow. The trick is making the delight and the learning the same moment, so the movement your child cannot look away from is also the movement that teaches them something.
